Splitting the Infinitive

No such grammatical rule exists. The prohibition against splitting infinitives is not a grammatical rule but rather a prescriptive convention by grammarian Henry Alford (1810-1871) in his book A Plea for the Queen's English (1866). The book outlines his personal, subjective thoughts about how English should be used, rather than how it is actually used. Some claims, though unverified, assert that this was an attempt to make English more like Latin of which is known to have never split the infinitive. For example: "to boldly go" vs "to go boldly".
